HRF Foundation Chair, The Hon. Andrea C. Harrison, County Councilwoman, 5th District

It is both my honor and privilege to serve as Chairwoman of the Harlem Renaissance Festival since 2010. This year's theme marks an important journey into freedom for generations of African Africans who were experiencing devastating cruelty under the Jim Crow laws of the South . The Great Migration was a defining moment in the history of African Americans. It embodies my belief that African Americans who ventured north were in search of freedom and new opportunities. Today, neighborhoods like Prince George's County have become predominantly African-American as a direct result of The Great Migration. Communities like ours are sprinkled from Washington DC north and west. They are vibrant and exciting, thanks to the strength and courage of our ancestors who set in motion the hope and vision for vast new opportunities in education, equality, fair housing, economic advancements, artistic expression, and social/political engagement for their family and communities.

This year the HRF is celebrating "The Great Migration" by raising awareness of this significant time in American History. We are asking all Prince George's County residents to learn more about The Great Migration. Whether you read a book, watch a movie, or visit a website, I encourage you to learn more about the dynamic and life altering individuals and their stories of struggle, courage, hope, and strength.

For 14 years, our collaborative organizations, sponsors, and local volunteers have come together to fulfill the mission of The Harlem Remembrance Foundation, Inc., an independent, not-for-profit organization, to create a regional venue in Prince George’s County that generates a multi-cultural respect for and raised awareness of the artistic, educational, and social contributions of the impact of the Harlem Renaissance Era in today’s society.” The Harlem Remembrance Foundation continues to receive the support of our community. The generous support of our sponsors makes all of this possible. Your sponsorship of festival events provides the seed from which the Harlem Renaissance Festival and the community grows.

Please consider sponsoring the festival to help build a strong community. I'll See You on Saturday, May 4th!
